Description: Paphiopedilum helenae is a remarkable orchid species recently discovered in the northern regions of Vietnam and southern China. It thrives in diverse habitats, including primary forests, mixed woodlands, coniferous environments, semi-deciduous forests, and open broadleafed dry forests. This orchid is typically found on steep, highly eroded limestone cliff faces, primarily facing north, at elevations ranging from 100 to 900 meters.

This orchid is known for its small size, making it the smallest within its genus. It falls into the category of hot to warm-growing lithophytic species. Paphiopedilum helenae features 3 to 5 distichous leaves that are coriaceous-fleshy to rigid and succulent in texture. These leaves are oblanceolate to oblong-elliptic in shape, with obtuse tips that often have three small teeth. The leaves are predominantly green but may display subtle purple spots near the base.

In terms of flowering, Paphiopedilum helenae graces us with its blossoms during the late summer and fall seasons. The inflorescence is suberect to slightly hanging, measuring between 1.6 to 2.8 inches (4 to 7 cm) in length. The inflorescence is strikingly adorned with densely black-purple, pubescent features. Each inflorescence typically carries a single flower, emerging gracefully from a conduplicate, ovate to elliptic floral bract that is notably shorter than the ovary.

Paphiopedilum helenae is a captivating orchid that brings a touch of elegance to any orchid collection. Its unique characteristics and charming blooms make it a sought-after addition for orchid enthusiasts and collectors alike.
