Description

Eria ornata

Quantity: 1 Plant

Size: Blooming Size

Eria ornata is a type of plant that grows in various places including the Himalayas, Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo, Java, and the Philippines. It typically grows in lower montane forests on limestone hills, at elevations between 300 to 1500 meters. This plant is rare and small to medium-sized, and can thrive in both hot and cool temperatures. It grows as an epiphyte, meaning it grows on other plants, and has dark brown, stiff, woody roots that come from laterally compressed, cylindrical pseudobulbs. The pseudobulbs are separated by 6 inches (15 cm) and are covered by basal sheaths. The plant has 3 to 5 fleshy leaves that are elliptic-lanceolate to oblong in shape, with an acute tip and an open channelled petiolate base. The uppermost two leaves are more persistent than the others. Eria ornata blooms in the spring and summer, and has an ascending or arching, 18-inch (45 cm) long, several to many flowered racemose inflorescence that has brown hairs. The plant has large ovate-lanceolate, orange to red-brown bracts and carries flowers that have a fragrance of vanilla but do not open well.
