Get to Know Dendrobium fuscifaucium
A Tiny, Rare Epiphytic Orchid from Laos
If you love small orchids with unique charm, Dendrobium fuscifaucium is a name you should know. Although it was only recently discovered and scientifically described in 2022, it has quickly caught the attention of orchid collectors worldwide.
Origin and Discovery
Dendrobium fuscifaucium was described by botanists Souvannakhoummane and Kumar from specimens collected in Kasi District, Vientiane Province, Laos. This epiphytic orchid is particularly interesting because, so far, it has not been confirmed in the wild and is known only in cultivation.
Plant and Flower Characteristics
- Plant size: Ultra-miniature, only 3–4 cm tall with 1–2 leaves per stem
- Pseudobulbs: Approximately 1.2 × 0.4 cm
- Flower: Solitary, tiny 8–17 mm, bell-shaped, light purple with a frilly pale lip, and a distinctive dark chocolate-colored throat—the origin of the name fuscifaucium
Despite its tiny size, the flower displays remarkable detail, making it a captivating choice for collectors of rare miniature orchids.

Growth and Flowering
This is a deciduous orchid:
- Summer: Produces leaves and grows actively
- Late rainy season to early winter: Leaves drop and the plant rests
- Flowering season: Typically blooms from late summer to early autumn, with type specimens recorded flowering in July
Care Tips (From Growers)
- Light: Bright shade or gentle morning sun
- Temperature: Cool to intermediate; 18–25 °C during the day, 10–15 °C at night
- Watering: Keep moist during growth; reduce watering during dormancy after leaves drop, and resume watering when new shoots appear
- Humidity and Airflow: High humidity and good air circulation; ideal for mounting or small, fast-draining pots
- Fertilizer: Very light, only during active growth

Related miniature, single-flowered species include Dendrobium hekouense, D. luoi, and D. wangliangii. What sets D. fuscifaucium apart is its distinctive dark throat, giving it a unique and charming appearance.
Conservation Note
As wild populations have not been confirmed, it is important to obtain plants only from legally propagated sources to help preserve this rare orchid species.

In summary:
Dendrobium fuscifaucium is a rare miniature orchid from Laos with a unique charm, from its tiny size to its dark-throated flowers. While it requires specialized care, it is a stunning addition for collectors of rare and unusual orchids, destined to be a highlight in any collection.
