Origin: Paphiopedilum gratrixianum is native to the southeastern Yunnan province of China, southeastern Laos, and northern Vietnam. These remarkable orchids thrive in primary wet, broadleafed, evergreen highland cloud forests situated at elevations of 900 to 1220 meters. They are accustomed to environments with constant humidity, minimal dry periods, and can often be found nestled in leaf litter within silicate soil pockets or clinging to rhyolite and granite cliff walls.

Plant Characteristics: Paphiopedilum gratrixianum is a small-sized orchid that flourishes in both warm and cool conditions. It forms clumps and exhibits lithophytic and terrestrial tendencies, typically growing in deep shade. Its unique foliage features distichous, solid green leaves that are linear to lanceolate, oblong in shape, and terminate in either acute tips or minutely tridentate apices. The undersides of the leaves are adorned with captivating purple spotting, particularly toward the base.

Flowering Season: This orchid graces us with its splendid blooms in the fall and early winter. The flowers emerge from an erect stem, reaching up to 10″ (25 cm) in length. The stem is green with a charming touch of purple pubescence. Paphiopedilum gratrixianum produces single flowers, each supported by a narrowly oblong-lanceolate to obovate floral bract, which is acute to obtuse and shorter than the ovary. These long-lasting flowers add a touch of elegance to any orchid collection.

Paphiopedilum gratrixianum is a testament to the beauty and diversity of orchids in their natural habitats. With its unique foliage and captivating flowers, it’s a must-have for orchid enthusiasts seeking something extraordinary.
