Plant information

Nervilia plicata is a type of orchid that can be found in various places such as Assam, Bangladesh, the eastern Himalayas, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Western Himalayas, Hong Kong, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Java, Sumatra, New Guinea, Philippines, Taiwan, and Queensland, Australia. It typically grows in shaded and damp forests along valleys at elevations ranging from 200 to 1600 meters.

This orchid is relatively small in size and can grow in both hot and cool conditions. It’s a terrestrial orchid with a short, brown-purplish leaf stalk. The leaves are heart-shaped with a hairy surface, featuring many curved veins raised alternately above and below. The plant blooms during late spring, producing flowers on an upright stem that is 2 1/4″ to 4″ (6 to 10 cm) long. Each stem usually carries 1 to 2 flowers.

To thrive, this orchid requires a humid environment ranging from hot to cool. During the winter, it goes through a dry resting period when its deciduous leaf falls off. In early spring, a new leaf emerges, followed by the appearance of flowers a few months later. The flowers start to bloom after the leaf has fully matured and dropped off.
