About Dendrobium bracteosum

With flowers up to 1 inch (2.5 cm) in size, Dendrobium bracteosum is a charming orchid. It falls within the small to medium-sized category and thrives in warm to hot conditions. Its stems are a unique feature – tufted, slender at the base, and fleshy as they extend upwards. These stems, with up to 9 nodes, are coated in papery sheaths.

The leaves of this orchid are another standout attribute. They are coriaceous (thick and leathery), rich green, and shaped as ligulate to oblong, tapering at both ends. The plant blooms during the transition from spring to fall, with pendulous, dense racemes that bear ball-like clusters of flowers. These racemes, about 1.5 inches (4 cm) long, emerge from nodes near the tops of older pseudobulbs. The flowers, numbering between 3 to 8 on each raceme, are not only scented but also possess a waxy texture.

Dendrobium bracteosum finds its home in diverse regions, spanning Papua and New Guinea, the Bismarck archipelago, and the Moluccas. It thrives at altitudes ranging from sea level to approximately 700 meters (1150 feet). An adaptable epiphyte, this orchid gracefully clings to forest trees and mangroves within the embrace of rainforests, often gracing the banks of rivers and coastlines.
